Why It’s Important To Brush With Your Child

Posted .

DEMONSTRATE GOOD ORAL HYGIENE SKILLS

Kids learn by watching their parents. Brushing your teeth alongside your child as they brush is a great way to demonstrate good brushing skills. Moms and Dads should make sure to teach kids to brush in a circular motion, getting each section of their mouth and all tooth surfaces.  Make brushing fun by listening to music, watching a video or setting a 2-minute timer. Watching themselves in a mirror is also a good way for kids to learn by seeing what areas they may be missing.

AGE CONSIDERATIONS

While kids may enjoy brushing independently, brushing teeth does take a certain level of manual dexterity.  For this reason, parents should go over their child’s teeth with the toothbrush after they brush until they are about 8 years old. Once your child demonstrates that they are able to do a good job on their own, then they can graduate to taking an independent role in their oral hygiene.
