Did you know that what you offer your child during their first 5 years will create taste preferences that will remain with them? Kids who are given sweet drinks including fruit drinks and flavored milk instead of plain milk or water will likely always choose these sugary options. This can lead to tooth decay and other health risks as they get older.
Why These Beverages Are Poor Choices
- 100% Fruit Juice – Lacks the fiber found in whole fruit and can be hard to limit portions. Toddlers 2-3 years old should have no more than 4 oz. a day and no more than 4-6 oz. a day for 4-5 year olds. Infants under a year should not have any juice.
- Flavored Milk– These contain a lot of sugar and should not be given to kids under the age of 2.
- Plant-Based Milk – These alternative kinds of milk do not include nutrients such as protein, vitamin D and calcium.
- Sugary Drinks – Soda and sports drinks contain sugar and acids, two components that invite tooth decay.
- Caffeinated Drinks – In addition to providing no health benefits these types of drinks can increase the risk of poor sleep, irritability, nervousness, headaches and difficulty concentrating.
